The procedure typically takes 1 to 2 hours. For adults, it is often performed under local anesthesia with sedation, while general anesthesia is usually preferred for children. The surgeon reshapes the cartilage and uses internal, permanent sutures to hold the ear in its new position.
Days 1-3: You will wear a soft, bulky bandage around your ears to protect the new shape and minimize swelling.
Week 1: The bandage is replaced with a lighter headband (similar to a sports band). Most patients can return to work or school.
Month 1: You will no longer need to wear the headband during the day, though we recommend wearing it at night to prevent the ears from folding during sleep.
Final Results: Once the swelling subsides (usually within 2-3 weeks), the results are permanent.
1. Will Otoplasty affect my hearing? No. Otoplasty only addresses the outer ear (the auricle) and does not involve the ear canal or the internal hearing mechanisms.
2. At what age can my child have ear surgery? The ears are typically 90% developed by age 5. We generally recommend waiting until a child is at least 5 or 6 years old so the cartilage is stable enough for surgery.
3. Is the procedure painful? During the surgery, you will feel no pain. Afterward, there may be some throbbing or tenderness for a few days, which is easily managed with standard over-the-counter painkillers provided in your Visit Plus Care kit.
