Vaginoplasty, also called vagina tightening surgery or vaginoplasty operation, is a Vaginal Aesthetic surgery that aims to reconstruct, repair, or to restore the old tightness of an enlarged vagina.
Vagina, which expands to its maximum capacity during vaginal delivery, cannot fully return to its original state after the delivery. The muscle and connective tissue of the vagina are severely damaged and due to the loss of elasticity, a permanent enlargement occurs in the vagina. Depending on how severe the enlargement is, the patient might have problems during sexual intercourse, which can damage the self esteem of the patient , or have an increased frequency of vaginal infections. Enlargement of the vagina can occur with age as well. In either case vagina tightening surgery is the preferred option. Vaginoplasty can also be utilized to repair any congenital problems the patient might have.
Vaginoplasty is only recommended to patients who:
Are healthy enough to undergo general anesthesia.
Have a congenital abnormality relating to the vagina.
Have vaginal enlargement that causes at least one of the following:
Loss of emotion and not being able to feel pleasure during intercourse
Decreased libido
Feeling pain during intercourse
Urinary incontinence
Recurrent vaginal infections
Loss of self-confidence
Before the surgery, the patient should:
Be at the hospital a day before their surgery for the pre operative tests to be performed.
Stop smoking and consuming alcohol at least 2 weeks before the surgery to alleviate the risk of a blood clot.
Avoid medication containing aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) for two weeks before and after surgery. These medications may increase the risk of internal bleeding. Patients should confirm each medication and supplement they wish to take with their Patient Coordinator.
Stop taking Multivitamin supplements 7 days prior to the surgery, and if it contains vitamin K should not be used for 30 days following the surgery.
Stop taking oral contraceptives 30 days before the surgery.
Vaginoplasty treatment is unique for each patient and is planned as such.
Vaginoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. Mild pain and bleeding are expected after the surgery. The patients are expected to take their prescribed medication as instructed by their doctor. The patients are recommended not to perform heavy exercises or swim for at least a month after surgery. Keeping a healthy diet, not smoking, and resting should expedite the healing post operation. The patients can start to have intercourse at least 6 weeks after the surgery.
Vaginoplasty involves making changes to the genitals which is one of the most sensitive areas of the body, and as a result the surgeons act with extra precision and carefulness while performing the surgery. Complications with Vaginoplasty are rare, some of the risks include:
Infection
Scarring
Bleeding
Blood Clots
Nerve Damage
Incorrect Vaginal Shape
Unbalanced Lubrication
Adverse reaction to anesthesia
